1 Adventure Awaits Bright orange carrots. Juicy red strawberries. Leafy green spinach. Round, shiny eggs. Full jars of jam and honey. Yawning, I watched as my human parents lifted dozens of crates filled with food. Why were Jennica and Darnell up so early? I honestly wasn't very sure. But here are a few things I am sure about. The first is that my name is Bo. The second is that I live here on the Davis family farm with my human family and farm friends. And the third is that it was too early to be up doing anything! It was so early, in fact, that the sun barely peeked over the trees. Rufus, the head rooster on the farm, hadn't even cock-a-doodle-dooed yet! And he never missed morning call--not ever . I guess one thing is true: farm life always keeps my family busy. So I did what any sleepy pup would do. I stretched and watched them load crates of food into the big, clunky metal thing called Car. Suddenly the front door swung open behind me. My human siblings, Wyatt and Imani Davis, rushed out. They were holding paper bags. "We're ready," Imani said sleepily. "Yep. Ready," Wyatt added, yawning. "And we brought breakfast." Breakfast? I sure liked the sound of that. So my tail started wagging and wagging. Hey, I'm just like any other dog--I love food! "Great!" Jennica called. She opened Car's door and waved us over. "Now, come on, kiddos! Adventure awaits." Adventure? I liked that too! Maybe I should get up earlier from now on! Imani, Wyatt, and I hurried into Car. I sat in the middle, in what humans call a pup seat. It looks like a pillowy box with a leash to keep me safe. "Let's get moving, Davis family!" Darnell said. "If we want to make it to the market on time, we need to get on the road now. All this food isn't going to sell itself." I used to be scared of Car because of how it sputters and growls sometimes. But then I realized that Car is actually pretty great because it takes us places! Once everyone had their seat belts on, Darnell steered Car onto the road, and away we drove! As we rolled along, Imani and Wyatt fell asleep. But I stayed awake peeking out the windows. The sun finally rose, and my ear lifted as I heard a familiar sound. Cock-a-doodle-doo! "Woof!" I barked happily. "That sounds like the perfect start to the day!" Excerpted from This Little Pup Went to the Market by Cam Higgins All rights reserved by the original copyright owners.
