It's likely you've heard of pizza rats, but Ratnip and his siblings are the real deal. They live in an old pizzeria and are all named after pizza toppings: Anchovy, Pepperoni, Veggie, and, of course, Ratnip, whose actual name is Extra Cheese Scratchy Paws Sniffsa-Lot. This cute series starter follows Ratnip through what begins as a regular evening in the city and turns into a gentle adventure. After foraging in a playground trashcan with his pal Cookie (a raccoon), Ratnip goes in search of some bubble wrap for a bubblepopping contest with his brother. While this mission is a success, the little rodent also finds something very peculiar--a rectangle (phone) that vibrates and shows a picture of a human whom Ratnip recognizes as a local jogger. Ratnip recruits other animals to help him return the phone to its owner, with plenty of comic hiccups along the way. This sweet-spirited tale is divided into 10 illustrated chapters that will amuse young readers while casting often maligned urban wildlife (pigeons, cockroaches, squirrels) in a flattering light.

Readers can scurry along with a sweet-natured rat, its siblings, and its metropolitan scavenger pals on their nocturnal adventures in this peppy chapter book series kickoff by Higgins (the Good Dog series). Extra Cheese Scratchy Paws Sniffs-a-Lot, aka Ratnip, enjoys a cozy existence living in a defunct pizza parlor located in the bright, loud City. Playing games like Bubble Pop at home are plenty fun, but for Ratnip, nothing tops the thrill of hitting the streets at night, dodging humans while seeking out tasty trash can treats and shiny trinkets to decorate its round treasure room (formerly a pizza oven). But the excitement reaches new heights when Ratnip finds a "Brand New, Totally Interesting, Super Special Thing I'd Never Seen Before"--a cell phone--and hatches a scheme with friends Rochelle the cockroach, pigeons Jinny and Ian, and black alley cat Katy to return the "black rectangle" to its human owner. Steinfeld (Kid Musicians) matches the novel's upbeat tone with thick black--lined illustrations depicting amiable interactions between friendly faced critters. Gentle humor and credulity-straining ingenuity weave an energetic tale that zips headlong into its sequel. Publishing simultaneously: Pizza Dreams Do Come True. Ages 5--9. K-Gr 4--This series debut follows the adventures of a city-dwelling rat named Extra Cheese Scratchy Paws Sniffs-a-Lot--better known as Ratnip--who, along with his siblings Marsharita, Anchovy, Pepperoni, and Veggie, lives in a pizza shop. Ratnip enjoys scavenging for "treasures" like bubble wrap and shiny objects. During one of his dumpster dives, he finds a cell phone, which he dubs "The Thing." When the phone rings, displaying a photo of a human he recognizes, Ratnip enlists the help of some animal friends to locate the person and return the phone to its rightful owner. This leads him on an entertaining adventure that emphasizes the value of honesty and the joy of helping others. The book's large text and frequent illustrations make it ideal for early chapter book readers. The plot, while straightforward, is engaging and well paced, with expressive artwork that depicts humorous movement and sound effects, such as "Fwomp!" or "HAHAHA." Ratnip's journey underscores a positive message: sometimes, helping a stranger can be just as rewarding as keeping a treasure. VERDICT A delightful addition to early chapter book collections, especially for young readers who enjoy humorous animal tales.--Kirsten Caldwell

CHAPTER 1 SOMETHING ROTTEN     "First one out of bed is a rotten egg!"   Mmm, rotten egg . I licked my lips. Rotten eggs are the slimiest. And the yummiest!   My nose wiggled as I imagined the deliciously stinky stench of a rotten egg. My whiskers twitched as I almost tasted its gooey greenness.   But then I was jolted awake by the sound of paws racing all around me.   "I win!" my older sister shouted as she leaped out of bed. Her name is Marg. (That's short for Margherita.)   "Aww, I wanted to be the rotten egg," whined my other sister, Anchovy.       My brothers, Pepperoni and Veggie, both stepped on me as they woke up and scampered out of the room.   You might have guessed by our names, paws, and whiskery noses that we are pizza rats. Why were we named after pizza toppings? Because we live in an old pizza parlor.       More on that later. First, you need to meet me! My full name is Extra Cheese Scratchy Paws Sniffs-a-Lot. But everyone just calls me--   "Ratnip! You'll be late for breakfast!"   "Coming, Cookie!" I said as I dragged myself out of bed... which is an old sock.   I love old socks. They are stinky and cozy. They have a hole at the top for your head and a smaller hole at the bottom where your tail pokes out. Ah, perfect!           As I stepped onto the perfectly dirty floor of our bedroom, a gray-and-black-haired fuzzball popped her head into the room.   "How many times do I have to call you for breakfast, Ratnip?" Cookie asked as she gave me a good morning nuzzle.   You might be thinking, Cookie doesn't look like a rat.   That's because she's not.   Cookie is a raccoon who has lived in the pizza parlor since way before my siblings and I showed up. Ever since we got here, she has taken really good care of us.   "Come on," she said. "Let's go while the sun's still down."   I followed Cookie outside onto the busy sidewalk.       We live in The City, where there are bright lights and loud noises everywhere.   I love it here. There is always something new to explore, different critters to meet, and PLENTY of garbage cans filled with good food!   The closest trash can was on the corner by the pizza parlor. My siblings were already there, digging around for breakfast.           But Cookie and I walked to the small playground at the other end of our street. It is always empty at night, which is when I'm awake.   Even though the playground was farther away, the food was so much better. I'm talking peanut butter sandwich crusts, chocolate chip cookie crumbs, and juice boxes with half the juice still left inside!           My siblings never understood why any critter would walk so far to eat, but Cookie knew what was up.   "Ratnip, you've got some raccoon-level smarts," she said as she pulled out half a pizza slice and tossed it to me.   I knew she was just joking about me having raccoon smarts, but it still made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.   And the pizza was still warm too.
