Dynamic formatting and engaging factoids combine to bring personal relevance to a high-interest topic. Chapters on the war in Europe, the war in the Pacific, and the war in Africa and the Middle East are bookended by chapters on the causes and aftermath of the conflict. Each chapter is introduced with guiding preview questions and includes in its opening pages a time line of major events. Like other titles in the Discover More series, every page is replete with images, quotes, graphics, or charts. Many of the photographs are striking in full color and more than just cursory battlefield shots. Women in factories, children sitting among ruins, and postwar celebrations in the streets are among the most remarkable images. Special sidebars make the book truly interactive, encouraging readers to visit historical landmarks, watch contemporary moving images, listen to period songs, and search for specific keywords online. Gr 5-8-This title does an excellent job of presenting World War II in a nutshell. The text is divided into five chapters: "The Path to War," "Europe & the Atlantic War," the Pacific theater, Africa & the Middle East, and the end of the war. Each section is divided into several two-page topics. The title page of each chapter asks three questions that are answered in the text. It is followed by a two-page time line with boxed information and vintage photos (some are color enhanced). Single images fill other spreads. The format is somewhat busy with randomly spaced photos, paragraphs, charts, graphs, cutaways, and maps. A colored band down the outer right margin of some pages features a "more here" reference that lists subjects to research, further reading, TV and movies, historical sites, activities, and a mini glossary. A special code permits readers to log on to a website that has several interactive buttons with topics such as "Child Heroes," "On the Front Lines," "Animal Heroes," "Secrets and Spies," "Heroes at Home," and "Everyday Heroes and Heroines." Packed with accurate material about the war, this book covers topics ranging from U-boats and other weapons to women's roles to wartime rations and culture. Lavishly illustrated with stirring archival photos, it also has eyewitness accounts, comparative visuals, and lots of statistics.
