Capturing the urgency that impelled 80 percent of the population of New Orleans to evacuate the city in August 2005, this magazine-style volume introduces young readers to the devastating weather event. Maps, time lines, photographs, diagrams, and inset primary source material serve as the scaffold for the day-by-day narrative, which starts with the first notice of the storm brewing in the Atlantic Ocean and ends with survivors attempts to start a new life. Residents in the storm's wake faced a big dilemma as they contemplated evacuation, and their worries are examined along with the logistic challenges of evacuating 1.2 million people from a major city. Quotes from eyewitnesses introduce each section and emphasize the terror and despair of those who weathered the hurricane. Though the majority of the book focuses on the impact on New Orleans, the author occasionally includes mentions of other cities on the Gulf Coast, such as Biloxi and Gulfport. An easily accessible companion digital book includes more stories of survival, as well as interactive web-based activities.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2015 Booklist

Three sections ("Storm Coming," "Landfall," "Aftermath") cover Katrina's evolution, human preparations and actions, the impact on the Gulf region, the devastation of New Orleans, and residents' and volunteers' efforts to return to normalcy. Pages filled with close-up photos, fact boxes, and more convey the frenzy of the storm. A section of kids' recollections is effective. Includes an online component. Maps, timeline. Glos., ind.
