Ages 6-8. A knight who has never fought a dragon and an equally inexperienced dragon prepare to meet each other in battle. Only a small amount of text is used and little is needed; dePaola's expressive illustrations more than carry the story.

A little knight who has never fought a dragon, a dragon who has never fought a knight, a determination on both sides to remedy the situation: so de Paola launches this latest puff-pastry revision of medieval legend. The knight reads books on dragon-fighting from the castle library, builds some armor, and practices charging at a dummy dragon. The dragon reads books on knight-fighting, practices threatening postures, and sets fire to dummy knights. Comes the fight, a wordless six-page fiasco--and then comes the castle librarian bearing books: How to Build a Bar-B-Q for the knight and The Outdoor Cook Book for the dragon, who will bring his own fire to the new, K & D Bar-B-Q featured in the last picture spread. Cute fluff on an old theme. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
