Gr 1--3--A book for every kid who has ever wondered where food comes from. In this fun and educational work, Voisard discusses topics like how hot a cayenne pepper is, the many varieties of eggplants and apples, and more. In extremely colorful digital illustrations, the book covers how different fruits and vegetables are grown, what they can look like (including different varieties), and how people eat them. To keep readers engaged, the author includes fun facts along the way: how fast a pizza can cook, why most carrots today are orange, or where the word spud comes from. Every food gets its own chapter, ranging from one page to several, with facts broken down into easily digestible chunks of information. For anyone who feels inspired, Voisard also includes some recipes, such as one for "waste-free pesto." At the very end, she briefly discusses animals and animal products. The text is often spread out around the illustrations, either to identify an item or to provide further information. This gives the book an informal air but may make it more difficult for beginning readers to follow. VERDICT A fun book that would be great in the hands of readers who want to learn more about where their food comes from but aren't ready for in-depth information.--Kerri L. Williams
