Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 3--6--Ardent train enthusiast Teddy, 12, has won the trip of a lifetime: a transcontinental train ride aboard the Excelsior Express, a high-tech train designed to look like it's from the 1920s. However, while aboard the Excelsior he learns not all passengers are as they appear. When the trip begins to make an unexpected detour, Teddy and Olivia, the only other child on board, must test the bonds of friendship to save the day. While set in the modern era, the same old-world charm that captivates Teddy will also engage readers as the boy excitedly sets the scene inside the lavish train cars. Teddy's personality and confidence gained through finding his passion will be relatable to certain neurodivergent children, while also allowing neurotypical children to gain a better understanding of their peers. Based on the bestselling board game of the same name, Kress's story uses adventure and mystery in a style reminiscent of Lemony Snicket, while Miles's simple yet engaging illustrations throughout support the prose to together tell an inspiring, exciting tale. VERDICT Perfect for readers who love trains and adventure. A valuable addition with an entertaining story line and enjoyable artwork.--Kristen Shaw
