Samuel G. Freedman, professor of journalism at Columbia University, speaks on Hubert Humphrey's efforts in the 1940s--in tandem with the African American leader A. Philip Randolph--to set the table for what President Lyndon Johnson, Humphrey, and Martin Luther King, Jr. accomplished in the 1960s. He is joined by Norman Sherman, Humphrey's long-time speechwriter and one of his closest aides; Sherman lives in Coralville and, at age 96, still writes op-ed pieces for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Their presentation marks the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
