Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) returns to the small town of Shinbone for the funeral of Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). Through flashbacks, Stoddard recounts his arrival in Shinbone as a young lawyer, his brutal encounter with the outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), and the complex relationship with Doniphon that shaped his destiny. Based on the short story by Dorothy M. Johnson.
