A year in bloom Flowering bulbs for every season

Lucy Bellamy

Book - 2024

"Bulbs are an essential part of any gardener's planting palette from the first snowdrops of winter to the last crocus of autumn, they offer endless opportunities for floral impact and experimentation. In A Year in Bloom, award-winning garden writer Lucy Bellamy showcases a wide-ranging selection of more than 150 bulbs, each presented with informative text, expert planting advice, and vibrant photography. Organized into four seasonal chapters, this modern grower's guide embraces familiar flowers such as tulips and daffodils alongside less common blooms, including dog's tooth violets, gladioli, and autumn snowflakes. Gardeners will discover bulbs suited for borders, containers, and grass plantings; bulbs to attract pollina...tors, for scent, for naturalized plantings; and reliably perennial bulbs that will flower year after year, supporting a sustainable approach"--Publisher's description.

Review by Library Journal Review

Bellamy and award-winning garden photographer Ingram team up once again (after Brilliant & Wild: A Garden from Scratch in a Year) for a lovely guide to growing bulbs all year long. Although the authors are based in the UK, and British gardens are featured prominently throughout the book, gardeners in the U.S. will find visual inspiration in the accompanying beautiful and ethereal photography. The book is divided into seasonal sections, featuring 150+ bulbs nominated for inclusion by garden designers from around the world. Each bulb entry lists hardiness designations, scientific and common names, botanical family, sunlight requirements, growing height, when to plant, and blooming season, plus a short descriptive paragraph about the bulb's physical characteristics, with planting tips. Other sections include an index listing bulbs by use, a glossary of gardening terms, a listing of bulb suppliers in the U.S. and Europe, and recommendations for further reading. VERDICT Seasoned and novice gardeners alike will appreciate the book's organized layout and information, along with the breathtaking photos showcasing delicate bulbs in all of their glory.--Aspasia Luster
