Review by Booklist Review

Holzmann (Geometric Knit Blankets, 2021) dubs these M. C. Escher-like knitting patterns as "the new colorwork" because they use "underexploited techniques for shaping and joining to create colorful motifs rather than traditional stranded (Fair Isle) or intarsia." Intended for crafty masters and maybe intermediate knitters, these 16 patterns indeed eschew intarsia for techniques like wrap and turn (short rows) and other less frequently used methods. Directions are complicated, with lots of up-front instructions for each throw before pattern highlights, which means plenty of page turning while working on any one project. Geometry is the key: picture cascades of cat or dog faces, holiday symbols (snowflakes, trees, candy canes), and diagonal or ramrod straight cars and homes. Linked videos just might help sort through a confusing layer of instructions, while a designation of easy/medium/difficult will help knitters choose. Resources include a glossary, technique tutorials, and lists of abbreviations and yarn suppliers.
