Book - 2024

In his heart Walter (aka Goth Moth) is a drummer--he has rhythm in his blood. There's just one problem: he doesn't have a drum kit, much less a band. But when he stumbles onto a rock concert featuring his favorite star--Jitterbug--everything changes. Could it be that Goth Moth's bold step into the daylight will put him in the limelight?

Review by Booklist Review

This follow-up to Jitterbug features moth Walter ("but call him 'Goth Moth'--nighttime rocker") an aspiring drummer, who, regularly plays air-drums, something he clearly enjoys, though his housemates do not. One day, mustering courage, he ventures from his shadowy home to attend his fave guitarist Jitterbug's outdoor concert. Soon, caught up in the moment, he excitedly gets on stage, plays with the band on actual drums, and garners everyone's approval, even a hug from Jitterbug. Back home, bolstered by the experience and now with housemates' support, he happily, if quietly, continues rocking. Though occasionally lacking flow, the rhyming text, translated from German, provides peppy accompaniment to the vibrant illustrations, interweaving bright and moody hues with playful cartoon elements, especially earnest Walter, sporting oversize spectacles, floppy long hair, and buckle-and-strap boots. Though tongue-in-cheek goth and heavy metal references might soar over the heads of younger readers (skull motifs; insect-inspired band names "Iron Mantis," "Def Lepidoptera," and "Drösophilia"), those who enjoyed the previous title will cheer Walter on and appreciate the positive message of doing what you love.
