Review by Booklist Review

Pan-Africanist leader Marcus Garvey has had an incalculable impact on Black thought, anti-colonial efforts, and anti-racist activism over the course of the last century. Edited by his son, Julius Garvey, this book represents the latest sally in a long-standing effort to posthumously exonerate Garvey for his politically motivated conviction on charges of mail fraud in 1923. This collection of essays, with a foreword by Ta-Nehisi Coates, introduces readers to the pardon initiative, which was spearheaded by the Caribbean American Political Action Committee in collaboration with a who's who of Black booksellers and publishers. The book opens with the perspectives of those involved in the exoneration effort, then shifts to an examination of Garvey's trial, conviction, and eventual deportation. Like many Black activists, Garvey was targeted by the FBI, culminating in a trial whose key witness admitted to having been coached on dates and names by the prosecuting attorney. Justice for Marcus Garvey introduces readers to the exoneration initiative and encourages further learning about one of the most important Black activists of the modern era.
