Kelly (The Lost English Girl, 2023) has delivered an uplifting WWII story about familial struggles, societal standards, and forgiveness. Sylvia Shelton married up. She's left behind her mother Maggie's dressmaking shop and immersed herself in posh charity meetings, high-society parties, and playing the perfect wife to her husband, Hugo. Izzie Shelton, feeling abandoned by her sister, has learned as much as Maggie will allow about running Mrs. Shelton's Fashions. Izzie has grand ideas for the business, but Maggie says that her shop isn't ready for such innovations. When Maggie passes away, Izzie and Sylvia are shocked to learn that the shop was left to both equally. Over time, the sisters learn to appreciate each other's talents and work together to move Mrs. Shelton's Fashions forward. With the war waging in the background, this story focuses heavily on the expectations of women in the 1940s. Kelly portrays friendships built, sisterhoods solidified, and new, deserving love stories formed. Women's strength in the face of adversity is the focus of this fine historical novel.
