Review by Library Journal Review

Science writer Engelhaupt (Gory Details: Adventures from the Dark Side of Science) compiles just over 50 travel destinations with hellish themes and underworld connections, categorized as either "Portals to the Underworld" (primarily ancient sites), "Hells on Earth" (like Hell, MI, and Blood Falls, Antarctica), or "Otherworldly Destinations" (which are awe-inspiring, a bit creepy, and potentially dangerous). Three- to five-page narratives, accompanied by photos and illustrations, outline historic and mythological connections and cultural importance with occasional sidebar lists and "Before You Go" tips. VERDICT A diverting browse of worldwide wonders on a theme many will find intriguing.
