The third book of the Divide series (after The Exiled Fleet, 2021) finds Excubitor Rake facing the impossible, twin tasks of finding a cure for an alien mutagen that is killing off humanity and stopping Augustus Mercer, the madman who has developed a bioweapon that will end the threat of the mutagen but at great cost to the human population. Jackin, the man she loves, is being tortured by Mercer to discover the Sentinel stronghold where Rake is gathering forces to oppose Mercer. Cavalon, the clone grandson of Mercer, is sent with his mother to find the source of the alien mutagen among abandoned Viator generation ships in a last-ditch effort to create a cure. The Sentinels are being helped by the last remnants of the Viator, who have been involved with keeping the shrinking universe from reaching the edges of the galaxy, where Rake's adventures began. The series is a terrific mashup of The Expanse and the Night Watch of A Game of Thrones, with strong emotional ties among a host of well-drawn characters and tense action sequences. It doesn't disappoint.

Adequin Rake now commands the Sentinels, while Cavalon Mercer continues to work to upset the hold his grandfather Augustus has on the galaxy. As they build their fleet while laying low on a distant planet, they discover that the only way to help humanity with its buried genetic issues is to find a cure. Now that information has indicated that Augustus plans to use a terrifying bioweapon on the outer colonies, Rake and Cav will have to fight to beat him at his own game. They'll have to cure the mutagen, defeat the villain, and make sure that the universe stays intact. They will need all of their allies, all of their resources, and more to face the betrayals and surprises in store--and their plans might fail anyway. VERDICT The conclusion to "The Divide Series," after The Exiled Fleet, maintains the action-packed pace and universe-wide setting of the previous books, while keeping the personal connection between the characters at the core of the story. Place this trilogy in the hands of readers who like the "Expanse" series by James S.A. Corey.--Kristi Chadwick
