Review by Booklist Review
People's interest in ancient Egypt seems to be eternal, and this richly illustrated book supports that interest. The introductory section gives an overview of Egyptian mythology and its place in terms of religions, beliefs, and influence of the dead; a time line of ancient Egyptian dynasties runs along the bottom of the page. The next section covers regional creation myths. About half of the book features 28 important gods and goddesses arranged alphabetically, with brief facts and detailed background about each; of special note is the inclusion of some of the earliest Egyptian gods and goddesses. Another section devotes about a paragraph each to 12 lesser-known deities. The last section mentions 21 monsters, creatures, and mortals, mainly treated as mythical stories. Topics range from one to eight pages (for cats), with one double-page spread as the norm. Gorgeous, full-color photographs of artifacts (with captions) or paintings appear in every two-page spread, but the text's font size is small. An index completes the volume. The writing is clear, though sometimes a little dense, which might challenge younger readers. A solid introduction to the topic.
