Dinosaurs are a common theme in books for little ones, but this lift-the-flap offering takes a fresh approach, framing the story as a paleontology dig in search of the biggest creature. After a spread of typical dino-dig tools, each featured dinosaur is introduced with a die-cut page offering a peek of its fossilized skeleton beneath, followed by a vivid, colorful illustration of the dino in its habitat. Some of the dinos have feathers, reflecting up-to-date scientific research, and a final double gatefold reveals the biggest find of the day with cheerful triumph. A top choice for the littlest dino fans, particularly those with parents nitpicky about accuracy.

PreS-Gr 2--A compelling introduction to dinosaurs for the youngest readers. The book starts with some of the tools that archeologists use--the "dig" part--before the rest of the book is all about the dinosaurs. An impressive spread shows bones in place out in the field with an exultation of "Dig! Dig! Dig!" The next spread shows a full skeleton of the dinosaur and its name. The following page gives a very brief description along with a picture of what that dinosaur might have looked like. The warmly colored and detailed pictures will be fun for children to examine closely and discuss. There's a range of specific nomenclature to satisfy budding paleontologists; since interest in dinosaurs for young readers is almost guaranteed, this book should be a popular choice with readers and teachers. VERDICT A terrific addition to the dinosaur shelf.--Debbie Tanner
