Garrett Kohl has been at the helm of four Taylor Moore actioners now, each of them carefully crafted and occasionally quirky--like 2021's Down Wind, which features a shoot-out in a hospital room. He's had a number of jobs. Green Beret. DEA Special Agent. Undercover operative for the CIA. Defense Department consultant. All the stuff of thriller heroes. But here, he's dealing with a force Reacher and Bond never had to confront: family. There's sister Grace, dad Butch, and son Asadi, plus assorted friends, neighbors, and lovers. They're all invested in Kohl's attempt at being a businessman: owning and operating a gas and oil exploration company on the Texas High Plains. He's found a site, and success would be "like finding Montezuma's treasure." The family's struggle is the core of the novel, and sparks fly when some bad people see the monetary possibilities. Some readers will likely be at home with this crossbreeding of family saga and thriller; others will wonder if they want to plow through chapter-loads of family gossip to get to the good stuff.
