Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Sequestered contestants vie for millions in this fiendishly clever thriller, the first in a spinoff series from Barnes's Inheritance Games saga. After a sprawling inaugural event, the second annual Grandest Game--a "mind-twisting" competition run by Tobias Hawthorne's four grandsons and Avery Grambs, the teen who inherited the eccentric billionaire's fortune--promises to be a more intimate affair. While cloistered on a private island, eight individuals must race against the clock--and one another--to solve increasingly elaborate puzzles. Contenders include 18-year-old Gigi, who wants to outdo her accomplished twin; 19-year-old Lyra, who needs money for college; 19-year-old Rohan, who requires cash to take over an exclusive, influential gambling club; and Hawthorne grandson Grayson, who was tricked into participating. Many players have secrets. Some have diabolical intent. All will do whatever it takes to win. Barnes's kaleidoscopic third-person narrative rapidly cycles between Gigi, Lyra, and Rohan, amplifying tension and creating drive. Familiarity with the previous books will lend resonance to certain plot and character developments, but baffling brainteasers, flagrant flirtation, and witty repartee earn the sustained interest of readers old and new. The cast is ethnically diverse. Ages 12--up. Agent: Elizabeth Harding, Curtis Brown. (July)

Review by Kirkus Book Review

Like the crack of a starter pistol, this thrilling series opener set in the world of the Inheritance Games thrusts competitors into the Grandest Game, an unpredictable, cutthroat, and life-changing contest. Avery Grambs, heir to Tobias Hawthorne's fortune, and the Hawthorne brothers, Tobias' grandsons, invite seven challengers to gather on a remote private island to compete in the second annual contest--this time with $26 million at stake. Gigi, Lyra, Rohan, Brady, Knox, Savannah, and Odette, each of whom is determined to win at all costs, travel to Hawthorne Island. Naturally, the money is a draw, but the players also have personal motivations. This year's competition has a surprise twist: The players will be divided into teams and forced to work with their rivals in order to progress. With the deadline only about 12 hours away, the clock is ticking. Each player's secrets are revealed and their relationships are tested as they race to solve the puzzles and escape the mansion before dawn. In this entry, Barnes recalls the magic of her original series, extending the excitement with inventive plot twists, compelling romantic tension, and fresh mysteries. Snappy, clever dialogue and memorable, well-drawn characters strengthen the work. The author also explores weighty social, economic, and mental health issues, imbuing the games with gravitas. Most protagonists present white; Brady is cued Black, Odette reads Latine, and brown-skinned Rohan's name signals South Asian heritage. A fast-paced, high-stakes page-turner that's sure to please new and returning fans alike.(Thriller. 14-18) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
