Mindful self-compassion for burnout Tools to help you heal and recharge when you're wrung out by stress

Kristin Neff

Book - 2024

""I'm tired of feeling stressed out every day." "I can't stand having so little impact, despite caring so much and working so hard." "I just don't have anything left to give." Over years of developing and teaching their renowned Mindful Self-Compassion program, Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer have found MSC to be uniquely helpful for people struggling with the soul-draining depletion of burnout, from health professionals, teachers, and caregivers, to shift workers and entrepreneurs. Each chapter in this engaging book offers an empathic story of someone stretched to their limits and an easily digestible bite of self-compassion, culminating in a simple anti-burnout tool based on MSC practi...ces. Readers learn quick and powerful ways to recharge their batteries, de-stress, and, above all, be kind to themselves--so they can be there for others. "--

Review by Library Journal Review

Frequent collaborators and cofounders of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion Neff (educational psychology, Univ. of Texas, Austin) and Germer, a clinical psychologist, have become the go-to sources for all things self-compassion-related in the psychotherapy world, with works designed for both clinicians and general audiences. As in their previous books, this volume emphasizes the correlation between tender self-acceptance and fierce actions, the importance of boundary setting, and the need to address burnout before it leads to negative outcomes in one's life, work, and relationships. With chapters focused on providing self-compassion tools, this book offers a DIY approach to circumventing burnout, designed to show that self-criticism and perfectionism fail where self-compassion creates entry points for individuals to find--and use--their strengths in purposeful ways. VERDICT This book will appeal to readers of Tara Brach and Emily Nagoski, while also offering new insights on burnout.--Emily Bowles
