Review by School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1--This book taps into children's interest in superheroes by contrasting the strength of popular superheroes with the strength of various bugs. Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Iron Man are mentioned in contrast to the Hercules beetle, the strongest insect in the world; the dragonfly, one of the fastest flying insects in the world; and more. Much of the success of the book is due to its thoughtful mix of entertaining and informative features. It includes interesting and surprising facts (Hercules beetles can carry up to 80 times their weight, which is like the Hulk lifting seven elephants); colorful, eye-catching formats; fascinating photos; clearly introduced vocabulary words; and a sprinkling of jokes. The book ends with an exercise that asks readers to study photos and figure out what they are showing. Answers are provided, and there is also an illustrated glossary in the back matter. With so many interesting features, this book merits repeat readings. VERDICT A strong introduction to informational books for beginning readers.--Myra Zarnowski
