Carrie Morgan has inherited her grandmother's cottage, with the stipulation that she fix it up and stay in her hometown for one winter. Carrie feels the pull of the magic in the mountains surrounding the town, but isn't sure she wants to give up her nomadic lifestyle and face the whispers about her family's witchiness and what happened between her and her best friend, Jess, ten years earlier. In addition to Carrie and Jess, the book is also told from the point of view of Cora, Carrie's pushy great aunt, who uses the book of stories passed down from grandmother to granddaughter to influence town affairs, although she thinks she's just being helpful. Carrie is aided with the repairs by a man with beautiful eyes, although he mysteriously disappears at the strangest times. This is a story of romance, broken friendship, and staying true to yourself under the weight of family obligations. This sweet tale with light magic will appeal to readers of Sarah Addison Allen and fans of the movie (and book) Practical Magic.
