Award-winning birder Dunne presents an informative title celebrating his chosen subject, how birds survive the intensity of winter. Accompanied by stunning black-and-white drawings by acclaimed illustrator and birder David Sibley, The Courage of Birds primarily takes readers through the winter lives of North America's breeding birds and considers how they manage to not simply survive but thrive in extreme temperatures and conditions. Following his musings over how the acclaim for the film March of the Penguins stood in contrast to the lack of widespread knowledge about how more common birds cope with the cold, he recounts the challenges of the season while discussing how the more ordinary birds forage, migrate, and physically cope on a daily basis. The short chapters highlight Dunne's extensive knowledge and cover dozens of species with their own unique stories and experiences. Winter bird counts from participants around the world are included as supplemental and often surprising material. A solid and visually pleasing title that will intrigue bird and nature lovers.
