Review by Booklist Review

Despite the toxic political climate attacking public libraries, most people still value them. Hallman's book outlines a long list of why libraries are vital centers of human connection. In a world where more people live alone and suffer loneliness and disconnection, the library can be a lifeline. The library's programming offers something for nearly everyone, creating a sense of belonging. And when people feel like they belong, they have more to give to others. In this way, a community is enriched. More than that, libraries have the power to bring together segments of society that might not otherwise interact, and civic engagement, Hallman asserts, is key to a healthy democracy. The author, who is currently a director for Urban Libraries Council, visited numerous libraries in preparation for leading the Memphis library system and draws on examples from all over the country to show how libraries remain "one of our country's greatest assets." Vital reading for any library lover but especially for those who want to push back against those intent on silencing the important work of this institution.
