Dean Klinkenberg

Book - 2024

"The Mississippi River is an American icon, yet few of us really understand the river's fundamental essence-its natural world. One quarter of North American fish species are native to the Mississippi. Over three hundred species of birds migrate along the Mississippi River. The river's wetlands, prairies, and bluffs support mammals and insects. Diverse plant communities thrive because of the river. From its beginnings in northern Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico, Dean Klinkenberg details the Mississippi's natural history and its modern recreational opportunities. Dean begins with the major ecosystems along the Mississippi River, exploring plant and animal life and illustrating how its varies from north to south. He sh...ows readers where to engage with the river's stunning natural wonders, primarily through public lands that are open to all, with particular emphasis on where to hike, paddle, and bike along the Mississippi. He also highlights natural history museums and aquariums, and points readers to communities that offer options for food and lodging. Packed with vibrant photos and useful maps, the book is the best source for understanding and enjoying this iconic and historic river"--

Review by Library Journal Review

Klinkenberg ("Frank Dodge" mystery series) advocates for healthy and resilient river ecosystems. In this book, he presents an overview and state-by-state guide of one specific body of water: the Mississippi River. Divided into two parts, the book first describes the river's history, environmental aspects, and its interconnectedness to wetlands, tributaries, flora and fauna, prairies, forests, birds, fish, and more. Klinkenberg also focuses on the human impact on the river and what this means for not only for the river's future but also for the years ahead for humans, plants, and animals. In the second half of the book, Klinkenberg provides a listing of parks and their featured highlights, contact information, and directions to see the river from different viewpoints from each state that borders it. VERDICT A sweeping introduction and valuable resource about the Mississippi River that shows and tells its importance in American ecosystems and the U.S. economy. Readers interested in environmental studies and travel will appreciate this title.--Jacqueline Parascandola
