The tight-knit Texas town of Edenberg is picture perfect, right down to its quaint main street and decades-long tradition of the Our Lady of Guadalupe parade. Psychologist George Hoffman and his wife, Beverly, want to make it even more so, founding Genetive, a company that promises to help people reach their full potential. As their wealth and influence spread, so does their sinister control of the town, right down to what kinds of books are allowed in the school libraries. When Beverly is found dead, the police dismiss it as an accident, but local teacher Nichole, her journalist friend Jenny, and Robin, Beverly's daughter-in-law, sense foul play. To find a killer, they must risk everything and discover the secrets behind the NXIVM-like Genetive organization. Multiple viewpoints, including reflections and revelations from the deceased Beverly, add tension as the mystery develops. Readers can count on author Bird (I Love It When You Lie, 2023) to write a twisty tale about the dark side of suburban perfection. Recommend to fans of authors Kimberly McCreight and Freida McFadden.
