Ill-fated fortune

Jennifer J. Chow

Book - 2024

"Felicity Jin grew up literally hanging onto Mom's apron strings in their magical bakery in the quaint town of Pixie, California. Her mother's enchanted baked goods, including puffy pineapple buns and creamy egg tarts, bring instant joy to all who consume them. Felicity has always been hesitant in the kitchen herself after many failed attempts, but a takeout meal gone wrong inspires her to craft some handmade fortune cookies. They become so popular that Felicity runs out of generic fortunes and starts making her own personalized predictions. When one customer's ill-fated fortune results in his murder, Felicity's suspiciously specific fortune has the police focusing on her as the main culprit. Now Felicity must find ...a way to turn her luck around and get cleared from suspicion."--

Felicity Jin despairs that she will never feel the baking magic possessed by others in her matriarchal lineage and will not be able to use her talents to enhance the offerings at the Gold Bakery, located on a cul-de-sac in a small suburb of Fresno. But one day she bakes fortune cookies that give the requisite joy to others. Even her handwritten fortunes give joy. One man finds money on the street. Unfortunately, the next customer receiving a special fortune ends up dead in a dumpster behind the shop: the self-proclaimed Fortune Cookie King, supplier of fortune cookies to restaurants in Fresno. Questioned closely by Detective Rylan Sun, Felicity and her mom lose their baking joy, and being associated with a crime, Gold Bakery loses the trust of its customers. Felicity and her neighbor and best friend investigate, hoping to find the truth before all is lost. This first in a new series featuring a likable Chinese American heroine will appeal to fans of Jenn McKinlay, Eve Calder, or Hannah Swenson.
