The (fake) dating game

Timothy Janovsky

Book - 2024

"Holden James picked the worst time to have a meltdown. His chance to audition for his favorite game show, Madcap Market, should have been a moment of triumph, a glorious, loving homage to his adored mom, who died six years ago. Instead, he's destroying the minibar in a grim Los Angeles hotel room -- recently dumped, partnerless and sliding into misery. But at least the hotel service is sublime. It even comes with an unfairly fit and sexy (smart-ass) concierge who arrives at the door with pizza, Monopoly, and deliciously distracting forearms. All Holden knows about Leo Min is that he's beautiful and unexpectedly sympathetic, and the chemistry between them is beyond. Maybe it's even enough to convince everyone, including ...the show's casting directors, that they're a real couple. All they'd have to do is crush the competition, win the huge cash prize and all of Holden's problems, his broken heart, his buried grief, his complete lack of money and direction, will be fixed. Of course, reality doesn't quite work out that way. But love is an entirely different game?"--

Who wouldn't want to be on Madcap Market? Apparently, Holden's boyfriend Buckley, who not only rejects Holden's proposal that they audition as a couple for the game show but also informs Holden that they are done as a couple. Deciding to go to Los Angeles by himself, Holden searches for a new partner, which seems fruitless until he meets Leo Min, the snarky and financially strapped concierge at the hotel at which Holden is staying. Leo is definitely open to the idea of being Holden's audition partner, and given all the flirty looks Leo gives Holden, maybe his new romantic partner as well. Janovsky (New Adult, 2023) is an inspired choice to help Harlequin launch their new Afterglow imprint since he has a real flair for delivering sensually descriptive love scenes with steam to spare and a gift for crafting characters with whom readers can readily connect. Pair this with a fun game show setting (think Supermarket Sweep) and a story line that is both humorous and thoughtful in its exploration of the grieving process, and readers are the real winners!

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Janovsky (New Adult) returns with a playful yet heartfelt romp through grief and new love set against the backdrop of reality TV. Holden James, a lifelong game show fan, is ecstatic at the chance to try out for his and his late mother's favorite show, Madcap Market, which combines elements of quiz shows and Supermarket Sweep and only casts couples with interesting backstories. Just before the audition, however, his boyfriend breaks up with him. Holden flies from England to L.A. solo, despite having little hope that the show's producers will take pity on him. Then he meets handsome and kind Leo Min, the concierge at his hotel, who surprises him by offering to be his fake boyfriend for the audition, enticed by both the cash prize and his own love of games. To appeal to the producers and the public, they paint a picture of love at first sight--which is a little too close to the truth for comfort. Janovsky deals sensitively with Holden's grief, as, six years after his mother's death, there's a lot he learns he's been repressing; the love story works around that plotline in a way that points to a real chemistry between the characters. The result is fun, fast-paced, and full of feeling. (Jan.)
