As part of a transportation lesson, story time, or bedtime reading, this rhythmic text with cheerful digital illustrations will inspire children to say, "Taxi, Yes!" A bright red taxi with anthropomorphized giant eyes and an expressive mouth prepares to start its workday. Human workers fill the gas tank, but then the taxi drives itself around the town, going to locations such as an office, coffee shop, home, and restaurant. As the day progresses, people attend recreational events such as sports and plays. The taxi even goes to the airport and takes a family home. A variety of people is depicted, large and small, of different ages and with varying skin tones, including a boy with one leg and crutches playing soccer. When the fares have all been collected, the taxi returns to the depot, shuts off its lights, and closes its eyes, ready for rest. The rhythm of the words is reflected in the rolling hills of the road, and the repetition of "Taxi, Go!" will keep the audience in gear.

PreS-K--Vehicle-loving children will delight in a busy and colorful world as hardworking Taxi gases up, checks tires, and careens around a vibrant city through one eventful day. Taxi collects fares and navigates heavy traffic, screaming sirens, a sudden downpour, and even a kitten-in-a-tree emergency, all while collecting passengers engaged in the business of life on one very eventful day. Digital illustrations capture the energy and movement of city dwellers and the hectic pace of life, while rhyming text that emphasizes alliteration makes for a fun-filled read-aloud. Children will enjoy the many details hiding in the art, which highlights diversity, work, play, and the value of community. VERDICT Children will reach for this book again and again. Recommended, particularly for the emerging reader shelves. --Rebecca Kirshenbaum

A taxi heads into the city. Rhyming text addresses a perky, smiling taxi as it makes its way through town taking fares, driving through rain and sun, and speeding along ("Careful, Taxi-- / not too fast!"). Colorful, kid-friendly illustrations depict the town's racially diverse occupants: families and friends, bus riders, cyclists, pedestrians, travelers with roller bags, ice cream eaters, dog walkers, firefighters who use a ladder to rescue a cat, and people shielding themselves with umbrellas against the rain. An elderly resident uses a walker, and a child with a limb difference plays soccer. Observant readers will spot the town's many animal inhabitants as well. This very busy taxi is constantly on the go, finding time to deliver passengers to different events and locations, including the airport, before eventually bringing a family home as the sun goes down, when it's time for all to go to sleep. Young transportation enthusiasts will enjoy this energetic ride and will slip into sleep when the taxi slows down, though adults reading it aloud may have trouble maintaining the rhyme, as the text is sometimes split between pages. Still, this bright and breezy selection is sure to be enjoyed, savored, and hailed by the very young. A lively and cheerful day in the life of a taxi.
