As the Leah's Garden series continues, it's been four years since the Nielsen sisters left their home in Ohio after Larkspur (Lark) confronted ruthless gambler Slate Ringwald for cheating their younger brother. Since then, they've homesteaded in Salton, Nebraska, where they also run a boarding house and a new seed business. Two of the sisters, Del (Delphinium) and Sythia (Forsythia), got married and started families. The youngest, Lilac, earns money as an illustrator; she's broken off an engagement to local minister Ethan. While visiting her brother Anders back in Ohio as he reopens the family business after a suspicious fire, she happily runs into an old schoolmate, Sam Gubberud. He lost his arm in the Civil War and is now looking for a teaching position, and Salton needs a teacher. As they all look ahead, they have to wonder if they're safe from the revengeful Slate Ringwald. Indeed, their faith will be tested. Readers will want to read all four titles in the series; the first three are Seeds of Change, A Time to Bloom, and Fields of Bounty.
