Brown's latest morality tale (posthumously published) is high drama and fast-paced, with a focus on family and survival at all costs. Teenage Brooklyn has been rebelling against her church family ever since a childhood trauma that her mother denied. She starts dating a local drug dealer and making drops for him. But when her parents discover the relationship, she lashes out, revealing secrets that implode the family. Afraid to face the consequences, Brooklyn runs away from home and starts working for another drug dealer. Life's good for a while; she's making a lot of money, dripping in luxury, dating a good guy, and making plans for a future to get out of the game. But Brooklyn is the kind of person who can't get out of her own way, and when everything she's worked for starts collapsing, she's forced to return home to a community that isn't ready to forgive her, with tragic results. With a plot that involves abortion, suicide, sexual assault, fights, cheating, and murder, this is bingeable trauma-drama written in a confessional style that readers will relish. Highly recommended for all urban fiction collections.
