In this techno-thriller mystery, Grumley ("Monument" and "Breakthrough" series) brings to life a near-future adventure that starts when a lone traveler and army vet, John Reiff, becomes a casualty of a wintry bus accident in a frozen river. When John is returned to life in a medical lab, he is surrounded by scientists who are surprised that the technology worked and are wary of telling him that he has been frozen for 20 years. As this miraculous undertaking unfolds, so do the ethics of the science and the purpose behind the experiment. The reanimated Reiff must remember his past, understand what has happened in the last 20 years, and unravel the plot to dispose of him. With the help of scientists who have been duped into believing that this was a legitimate scientific project, Reiff realizes that the plot to use him is only the beginning of a dark and sinister future. VERDICT A fast-paced thriller for mystery and techno-thriller readers, Grumley's novel draws on speculative technology to forecast the dark side of scientific advancement and medical ethics.--Ron Samul
