All Olivia wants out of life is to fly a plane, but in the 1920s, only pilot Heath takes her dream seriously, leading to an intense but abruptly ended relationship. They meet again as competitors in the 1927 Dole Derby, a groundbreaking air race from California to Hawaii. On the harrowing but exhilarating journey, Olivia ponders whether Heath deserves the second chance he's seeking--if they both survive. In the present day, Wren has no idea where her life is headed. Having lost her job, apartment, and boyfriend, she's surprised to inherit a dilapidated farm on Hawaii's Big Island from an aunt she barely knew. Discovering a mysterious antique plane hidden in her barn inspires her to attempt a fresh start, but she may be in over her head. Crisp descriptions create a strong sense of place that nearly makes the weather itself a character. Inspired by true events, the interweaving stories of Ackerman's two protagonists, one confidently ahead of her time and another whose strength surprises her, complement each other well as each woman tries to find the place where she belongs.
