Gladstone's Craft Wars trilogy continues (after Dead Country, 2023). Dawn has become one with a god born straight out of the Craft, and she's tasked with building up enough power to take on the world-threatening eldritch spiders that are gathering to attack humanity from far beyond the stars. But she can't do it alone--luckily, a terrifying new power, a couple of allies that fans of Gladstone's Craft Sequence series (starting with Three Parts Dead, 2012) will recognize, and a series of coincidences will give her the tools she needs to try and ally properly against the horror coming for them all--while Tara Abernathy and her own allies figure out whether to help Dawn or try and stop her. While newcomers will struggle for access without reading the first two books, Gladstone's fascinating world of magic continues to expand in this new volume, and the narrative feels vast and exciting. Dawn and her new serpent friend Sibyll power this epic fantasy novel that is the penultimate that Gladstone plans to write in his Craft world, and fans of the series will be excited to get their hands on it.

The apocalypse is coming (again), and a girl and a god have joined forces to ensure that it won't come to pass, even if they have to destroy everything else in the world to stop it. Ever after nearly dying, Tara Abernathy has been tracking Dawn since the events of Dead Country and believes that Dawn's crusade and powers are her fault. Both Dawn and Tara will need allies--craftspeople, lawyers, old friends, and dead gods--as they discover that not everyone is watching the stars and worrying about the end; some are ready to help the apocalypse along. The characters, high-stakes action, and witty dialogue tie together the books across Gladstone's entire "Craft" universe. While the planned "The Craft Wars" trilogy can be read apart from the books in the previous "Craft Sequence" series, fans may want to begin a reread to gain insight into some of the deeper relationships hinted at in this volume. VERDICT Gladstone's second "The Craft Wars" book increases the action and devastation, bringing together familiar characters from across the world of the Craft as the battle for survival continues.--Kristi Chadwick
