Freida McFadden

Book - 2024

"There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men's maximum-security prison: 1) Treat all prisoners with respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information. 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary's most notorious and dangerous inmates. And they certainly don't know that Shane was Brooke's high school sweetheart--the star quarterback who is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders. Or that Brooke's testimony was what put him there. But Shane knows... And he will never f...orget."--

When she inherits her parents' house, Brooke Sullivan moves back to her hometown, hoping for a better life with her ten-year-old son. She takes a job as a nurse practitioner at the nearby men's penitentiary, in spite of the fact that Shane Nelson, her high-school sweetheart, is serving a life sentence there for a grisly murder spree. Surely she'll never encounter him, which is a good thing, because he almost killed her too, and it was Brooke's eyewitness testimony that sealed Shane's conviction. Unfortunately, Shane is a frequent visitor to the infirmary, where he begs Brooke to help him prove his innocence. Brooke begins to doubt her memories. Is it possible that the wrong man is in prison? Brooke sets out on an investigation that puts her life in peril. Prolific author McFadden (The Housemaid's Secret, 2023) may occasionally stretch the bounds of credibility but always in the name of a thoroughly entertaining read that delivers everything her readers expect--a tense stand-alone psychological thriller with plenty of unexpected twists and turns.
