Cyrus Silverstar's fears run amok in this fourth entry in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Academy series. Despite watching his classmates magically conjure cute dogs and cats for their Wish Whispering class assignment (grant someone's wish for a pet), Cyrus worries he might get saddled with a scary animal. His fear proves legitimate when the wished-for pet he summons turns out to be a baby dragon, which promptly escapes onto the academy grounds. As Cyrus searches for his wayward homework, he enlists the help of friends and discovers that he's not the only one afraid of things. A realization of what it truly means to be brave, coupled with a lesson in empathy, leads to a sweet ending for all. This charming chapter book gets an extra boost of whimsy from its candy-colored illustrations, which also depict a nicely diverse cast of characters. Cyrus himself has brown skin, delicate wings, and a plump, pink blossom for a hat, and the rogue dragon might have flown off of a Lisa Frank folder. With its action and relatable emotions, this magical misadventure will delight fairy tale fans.
