Norma Gallagher is a private person, always preferring the company of hound dogs and horses to people. As a search-and-rescue volunteer in the remote Utah-Arizona wilderness, Norma likes to think she knows how people operate, but her latest search throws her for a loop. The entire country is transfixed by the disappearance of Jill Moss, a petite blonde woman who ran away from her boyfriend after an altercation at their campsite. Norma finds Jill in the wilderness, but after their initial encounter, nothing that happens next follows the usual search-and-rescue procedures. Prolific author Hyde (Just a Regular Boy, 2023) raises thorny issues around domestic violence, examines the power of misplaced guilt, and illustrates the bonds of shared experience in her take on a ripped-from-the-headlines story. Her characteristic empathy is on full display as she questions why certain missing-persons cases generate more attention than others. Fans of Hannah Mary McKinnon and Erica Bauermeister will appreciate Hyde's continued commitment to speaking up for the underdog and giving a voice to characters whose voices we don't often hear.
