Review by Booklist Review

Winger grew up in suburban Idaho but always felt the pull of the land and simpler life. Currently, she and her family are homesteading in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, living a life that in some ways resembles that of a century ago. Of course the internet is always a factor even there, as a blog and a podcast are part of the routine. Weather, crops, and livestock are all a challenge, but there is joy that has been lost by the complete mechanization of most people's lives. Simpler ways and simpler food may be the way to peace and harmony, as is furnishing a home with junk-store finds. Of course Winger doesn't expect us to drop our briefcases and pick up a shovel, so she offers ways of including aspects of her lifestyle in urban lives. There are lists of suggestions, recipes for things like lip balm and bug spray that work for all, and a mostly internet resource list at the end. Public libraries will find this an interesting addition.
