Review by Booklist Review

The second book in the Styx and Scones series is another fun adventure where the cat and dog duo is warned about messing with magic but does it anyway. Styx, a purple cat, and Scones, a dog, live with two witches, and when those witches are called away to help a sick friend, Styx and Scones are warned not to play with the magic crystal ball. Scones can't help but feel sorry for a ball that doesn't get to do all the fun things other balls get to do, like be bowled down an alley or dunked in a basketball hoop. When he finally convinces Styx to play catch with it, they end up cracking it. Then the ball runs away and escapes into the bog. Can they find it before the witches return home? Cooper's antic cartoon panels starring an odd-couple cat and dog keep the pages swiftly turning. A how-to guide in the opening pages helps kids unfamiliar with reading comics grasp the conventions. A strong choice for kids who like Andy Runton's Owly series.
