Jasmine Toguchi and her family wrap up their family vacation to Japan in this eighth (and last) early chapter-book series entry. Eight-year-old Japanese American Jasmine has three days left in her summer vacation, and she's visiting Kyoto. She's been enjoying quality time with her obaachan and has grown closer to her older sister, Sophie. There is much to explore, from beautiful rock gardens to the delicious Nishiki food market. But as their time with Obaachan comes to its end, Jasmine can't fully enjoy the present. Sophie is also preoccupied as she is nervous about starting middle school after they return home. Obaachan helps them cope with their worries about leaving and reminds them to live in the moment by focusing on good things. Detailed black-and-white spot illustrations add charm and sweetness to the short, readable chapters. Journal pages handwritten by young Jasmine and sent to her best friend give extra insight into her thoughts and feelings. Also included are an author's note and information on making a miniature Zen garden. A feel-good, realistic, and relatable story.
