Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Bradford concludes her House of Falconer trilogy (after In the Lion's Den) with an affecting story of James Falconer's WWI service and return to London civilian life at age 48. Sixteen years after his wife and son died in childbirth, Falconer, now a British Army major, fearlessly leads his men into the Battle of the Somme, not caring if he lives or dies. He's wounded, and both of his legs are severely injured, though he's eventually able to walk again. He resumes running his profitable London retail chain, but is forced to close some of the outlets due to the economic downturn following the war. Meanwhile, James reignites his relationship with Georgiana Ward, who bore his daughter, Leonie, out of wedlock 28 years ago. Georgina rejects his marriage proposal, however, fearing Leonie will never forgive him for not being present during her childhood. James then meets beautiful and accomplished newspaper columnist Annabel Kelsey. Though the attraction between them is intense, James believes Annabel is too young for him, but his friends and family try to convince him otherwise. Bradford's tale is enriched by dynamic characters, especially James, who heroically persists in his effort to rebuild his life. It's a satisfying culmination to a richly drawn historical series.
