"Lydia Barnes is excited for a fresh start when she moves to the quaint mountain town of Peridot, Georgia. Her friend, Fran, offers her a job at the Measure Twice fabric store and even sets her up on a date with the handsome Brandon Ivey, who also happens to be Lydia's new next-door neighbor. Finally, things are looking up. But after a disaster first date that ends with a fist bump instead of a kiss, Lydia doesn't think her night can get any worse. She's soon proven wrong when she later stumbles upon Brandon's dead body. Considered the prime suspect by the police, Lydia calls on her friends to help her hunt for the truth and prove her innocence. But when another body is soon found inside the Measure Twice store, Lyd...ia knows that the killer must be close by, and that this town has more than its fair share of secrets. Who would want to frame the newest addition to Peridot for these terrible murders--and why? Lydia may discover that while sewing might have a pattern, killing rarely does. Will she be able to stitch together the clues and clear her own name before the killer strikes again?" --

After Lydia Barnes learns her husband is cheating on her, she flees to the North Georgia mountain town of Peridot, where her friend Fran gives her a place to stay as well as a job at her fabric shop, Measure Twice. She feels at home in Peridot until Fran convinces her to go on a date with Lydia's neighbor Brandon Ivey. After a somewhat awkward date, Lydia decides to bring Brandon some brownies and finds him stabbed to death in his apartment. She quickly becomes Sergeant Simpson's chief suspect. When she finds a second body, Lydia looks even guiltier, and her friends seem to pull away from her, although others have possible motives; or someone may be trying to frame her. Bailey's first Measure Twice Sewing Mystery features a sympathetic character and passionate sewist, and details of fabric and sewing frame the story of a woman who has lost everything and is trying to find her place in the world.

A newbie in town goes on a blind date and ends up a murder suspect. Moving to the little mountain hamlet of Peridot, Georgia, has felt like coming home for Lydia Barnes, who never realized how great fitting in could feel. A large part of her contentment comes via Fran, her new boss, friend, and landlady, whose sewing store, Measure Twice, is Lydia's happy place. Her joy at making a friend like Fran gives Lydia confidence in all of Fran's suggestions, so when Fran suggests that she try going on a date--her first since her divorce--Lydia wonders if Fran knows something she doesn't. Fran's match for Lydia is Brandon Ivey, of the Turn the Page bookstore, and even listening to Brandon tell her over dinner that he's working on the next Great American Novel isn't enough to dampen her interest. When she gets home from their date, she decides to bring Brandon some brownies in hopes of furthering their connection, but instead she finds that he's been killed sometime between their dinner and her visit. Lydia understands when the police think the culprit in Brandon's killing is obvious, and she knows she'll go down for the death unless she can produce a more likely suspect. Now the townspeople Lydia's come to love are also her lineup of suspects as she tries to figure out who among her new neighbors could possibly be a killer. With backup from rescue dog Charlie and her newest pet, the essentially feral cat Baby Lobster, Lydia bumbles her way through the investigation, though not before the killer strikes again. Distinguished from similar cozies by a heroine who's more than a bit hopeless. Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
