Petersen concludes the Pictures of the Heart series (Remember Me, 2023; Finding Us, 2023) with a Seattle-set tale of friendship between May Parker and Lee Munro. May's mother is Japanese, her father is Caucasian, and the two became close friends as Lee defended May from racist bullies. The two also share a deep faith. Lee's family moves to get away from their increasingly Asian neighborhood, and the friends are separated for years, until they're reunited during the 1909 Yukon-Alaska-Pacific Exhibition. Lee is a police detective helping with security, and artist May is working for a photography studio. They know that God has brought them together, but will Lee's family ever accept May? When one of Lee's cases becomes dangerous and accidentally involves May, they will need to rely on prayer. Peterson's compelling love story sheds light on the long history of anti-Asian prejudice in the U.S. With a fascinating historical setting and many intriguing cultural details, Peterson's latest love story is richly satisfying.
