Review by Booklist Review

This exuberant volume surveys a variety of aquatic life in the planet's oceans and seas. With text by marine biologist Scales (The Brilliant Abyss, 2021) and watercolors by Marcel George, it leads readers around the world in its exploration of select undersea creatures. Everything ocean-lovers and the ocean-curious could want is here, but Scales goes far beyond predictable analysis by infusing her concise studies of each subject with connections to pop culture, history, philosophy, and more. It may not be unexpected to see Finding Nemo mentioned in a discussion of the clownfish, but readers will be surprised that Sigmund Freud is aligned with the European eel, monetary policy with the money cowrie, and how the portrait of Atlantic bluefin tuna in sushi recipes is linked to the American appetite for Japanese electronics. Scales addresses the fact that some species are suffering from overfishing, habitat damage, and the warming climate. Overall, this smart and sparkling content provides readers with an abundance of eclectic information, giving it wide appeal.
