Katy Birchall

Book - 2023

"The Hating Game meets Beach Read in Katy Birchall's enemies-to-lovers romcom The Last Word, about a young journalist who puts her career (and her heart) on the line when her former work nemesis is hired in her newsroom. Harper Jenkins is at the top of her game. A brilliant, determined journalist with a well-known knack for getting tight-lipped Hollywood stars to open up to her, Harper loves her job as Celebrity Editor at a newspaper's glossy weekend magazine and has the best contacts in the business. But when her awful boss hires talented reporter Ryan to be the new Features Editor, Harper is furious. Because the two have met before: a decade ago, they were interns at the same publication, where they fell into a whirlwind ro...mance...until Ryan betrayed Harper, and they never spoke again. Thrown together in a busy newsroom, their dynamic is a disaster from the start. They can't agree on anything and bicker constantly-Ryan can't bear how chaotic and messy Harper is; Harper finds Ryan's condescending nature infuriating. They clash over who's writing what article, and fight over who's going to which event. Yet as they're forced to spend more and more time together, Harper realizes she may have misjudged Ryan and can't help but feel a spark growing between them. Long buried feelings start to resurface and, when they're thrown together on a romantic press trip abroad, their chemistry comes to a head. But all is fair in love and magazines, and with the news that layoffs across the department are imminent, Harper is left to wonder: who will get the last word?"--

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Two ambitious journalists go head to head in this glossy office romance from Birchall (The Wedding Season). Londoner Harper Jenkins is skeptical of love. Still burned from a heartbreak 11 years earlier, she makes her career as a celebrity journalist her top priority. She's just managed to score a scoop that could be her big break when she learns that her former flame, the suave Ryan Jansson, has joined her magazine's features team. Ryan is just as charming, gorgeous, and competitive as she remembers, and the office becomes a war zone as the pair bicker over articles and work habits and vie for the last word. A press trip to Italy puts the pair in close proximity, reigniting old sparks and making Harper question if she should take a second chance on love. Though slow to start, the pace picks up as the romance heats up. Ryan and Harper's chemistry is undeniable and their constant competitions are exhilarating. Fans of the enemies-to-lovers trope should check this out. (May)

Intrepid and dedicated entertainment reporter Harper Jenkins is at the top of her game. Her passion for the job has led her to some of the best industry scoops and great relationships with celebrities, but her boss does not seem to appreciate her work or her talent. Harper is shocked when he hires a new editor whom she'll be working closely with--Ryan Jansson, a former coworker and boyfriend who broke her heart years ago. They clash at every turn, but working with Ryan becomes easier when Harper realizes that there is more to him than she imagined. However, the uncertain future of their magazine threatens drastic changes in their departments, and her miserly boss seems to be eyeing her editorship with an axe. Change is coming for the journalists, and the problems they faced years ago begin to appear again. Can they weather the storm together, or will Harper be left behind? VERDICT This enemies-to-lovers romance from Birchall (The Wedding Season) is the perfect office-love story, and readers will fall for Harper and Ryan and their second-chance romance.--Jenna Harmison
