Right girl, wrong side

Ginny Baird

Book - 2023

"New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ginny Baird brings her signature charm to this multicultural story about two disputing families sharing a beach house and the messiness that comes from falling in love with someone who your family is determined to despise. Busy flower shop manager Evita Machado can't wait to get to Nantucket. With a bad breakup behind her, relaxing at the shore with her folks and her brothers and their families sounds like the sure cure for heartache, and their vacation destination looks like an amazing place! But when they arrive at the quaint rose-covered cottage, another group has already put down stakes: the Hatfields. Ryan Hatfield was Evita's former crush from high school, but their busin...ess rival moms refused to let them date. Now history professor Ryan is here for a week with his parents, who won them this oceanfront rental in a society silent auction. Once it's clear there's been a double-booking due to a bidding mistake, Ryan's mom digs in her heels, meaning to stay. When Evita's mom won't back down either, both sides tepidly agree to share the luxury accommodations by dividing the cozy space. With the boisterous Machados livening things up and the strait-laced Hatfields tamping them down, can Evita and Ryan keep the peace between the warring factions while fostering a growing chemistry between the two of them?"--

The Hatfields and McCoys get an update in this delightful rom-com from Baird (The Duplicate Bride). Evita Machado has been procrastinating telling her big, tight-knit family that she broke up with the boyfriend they all loved, and now it looks like she's going to have to break the news on family vacation. That's soon the least of her worries, however, when their Nantucket beach house is accidentally double-booked and the rowdy Machados find themselves sharing it with the stuffy Hatfields, the family of Evita's mother's fiercest business rival. Youngest son Ryan Hatfield has had a soft spot for Evita since they were lab partners in their high school chemistry class, and those feelings come flooding back now that they're back in close quarters. Their chemistry is palpable, but they'll have to work together to settle their families' feud if they're going to give their attraction the chance to bloom. Baird delivers a cast full of three-dimensional characters that readers will be happy to spend time with, and the vivid Nantucket setting adds to the charm. Readers will fall in love right alongside the hero and heroine. Agent: Jill Marsal, Marsal Lyon Literary. (Mar.)

Star-crossed since high school due to their mothers' bitter rivalry, Ryan and Evita just might get a better ending than Romeo and Juliet if they manage to reconcile their families when a twist of fate brings them all together. Evita Machado is excited for bonding time with her big, hearty family at a Nantucket beach house. When there's a disastrous double-booking, Evita and Ryan, the eldest son of the Hatfields, must placate the situation. Ryan makes a quick plan to divide the cottage to appease everyone and salvage their vacation. If only their families weren't so different and stubborn, maybe Evita and Ryan would consider their own hearts' desires: to pursue the chemistry they've had since they were lab partners long ago. Baird excellently presents a contrast of characters and family dynamics, particularly through the Machados' distinct three-generation Puerto Rican household. Forced proximity and family wars renew the unrelenting attraction between Ryan and Evita, leading to a slow-burn romance. VERDICT The latest from Baird (after First Bride to Fall) is perfect for fans of Netflix's Love in the Villa and those looking for a romantic beach read.--Hazel Ureta
