Ana takes Manhattan

Lissette Decos

Book - 2023

"Ana Karina loves her job--though she isn't quite where she thought she'd be by now. As reality TV producer, she orchestrates extravagant marriage proposals that always (read: mostly) go as planned. If they don't, she's not afraid to cut and paste scenes to perfection afterward. Even if her arrogant film editor isn't a fan. But what does he know about romance anyway? If only Ana's love life was as simple as fixing botched engagements. She's sick and tired of guys who give her the ick. Open toed sandals? Gross. Mr. Casual. No, thanks. Wears a toupe? Cut! Ana's got a mile long list of all the cringey things to steer clear of. And Ana loves lists. Her to dos for her best friend's wedding, show ...ideas to pitch, and even her list of what she does want in Mr. Right. With only four requirements, why is it taking so long to find him? She refuses to put her life on hold waiting. She'll just date four men who each embody one quality. Never mind them lacking in other departments. Yet as she finds the Prince Charming in every frog, she also gets closer to facing who she's avoided for years. Herself"--

Cuban American television producer Decos' first romance novel is a cheeky contemporary rom-com that captures all the frustration and bravery of a perfectionist who finally decides to throw caution to the wind. Nothing surprises Ana Karina, who has meticulously produced the last eight seasons of a surprise-proposal reality show designed to capture the heartwarming moment when real-life couples get engaged on camera. But Ana's personal life is less than perfect, and while she wants to have her own happily-ever-after moment, she hasn't found the right guy. So, in a bid to shakes things up, Ana decides to date multiple guys at once, leading to hilariously predictable consequences. Meanwhile, Ana's new editor, Richard, matches all the items on her "What to Avoid" list, but he sees her for who she is and reaches out in her time of need. Now Ana is discovering that her ideal guy isn't perfect either, but he could be perfect for her. Genuine dialogue and excellent secondary characters combined with tight pacing makes this chaste romance, with just a hint of spice, a true standout.

DEBUT Ana Karina loves producing Marry Me, You Fool!, her reality TV show. The other thing she loves is lists; Ana has a list for everything: the perfect date, the perfect restaurant, even the perfect husband. But when Ana finds out her perfect show is about to be cancelled, she decides to make some changes, even if it means letting some of those perfect lists go up in smoke. While helping her best friend Gia, plan her wedding to "Mr. Perfect," Ana maneuvers to get a date with the best man, Landon, who fits everything on Ana's list. But the mystery of who Landon really is to Gia drives Ana to make some rather foolish decisions. Why not find one guy for every trait on her perfect list? Fernando is so romantic, and TJ is incredibly sexy, Philip an accomplished artist. She can check the list off, one man at a time, but this game ends with broken hearts and lessons learned. VERDICT It's clear from the outset that veteran reality TV producer Decos knows her subject matter, and Ana is a likable, fun character who will make readers laugh and believe in finding true love.--Jane Blue
