In Newport, Rhode Island, the prominent Coventry family built the Cottage, a beautiful beaux arts home, and owned it for more than a century. When funds to maintain it ran out 15 years ago, newcomer Susie Utterback moved in with her son, Jack. Now Jack and Maggie, the oldest Coventry sibling, are engaged, and wild-child middle sibling Cassie is coming home. Cassie only planned on spending a few days, but her family's usual chaotic existence has reached new highs (or lows), and she's worried enough to stay for the summer. Can Cassie help find a solution to fix any of the family troubles? The Coventry family is quirky and slightly obtuse in that charming old-family-money kind of way, properly setting the scene for a wide range of troubles they accidentally create for others. The intriguing backstories of Edmondson's (Ladies of the House, 2021) characters make the relationships engaging as secrets and gossip keep the gentle story moving. Fans of Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle (1948) and anyone looking for new fictional friends and a light story with a strong setting will enjoy every page.
