The author of first-rate thrillers The Nanny (2019), To Tell You the Truth (2020), and The Long Weekend (2022) has done it again. After winning a large amount of money in a lottery, Tom and Nicole move into a new house. And what a house it is: beautifully constructed and full of the most cutting-edge, technologically advanced gadgetry, including a state-of-the-art security system. So when Tom is found dead in the pool, and the security system offers no clues as to how or even when he died, the police and his grieving widow are bewildered. Was this, as it seems, an accident? Or was Tom murdered? And if so, by whom? Nicole seems genuinely devastated at losing her husband, and readers will feel sympathetic toward her, but there's always that little bit of doubt. Macmillan is such a good writer that we're constantly guessing, believing one thing and then another, right up until the book's final moments. A treat for the author's fans, and, for those who are new to her, a wonderful introduction to this fine writer.
